Elsie’s Bird

If you’ve ever had to leave the safety and security of your home and move to a new and foreign place, you’ll empathize with the title character of Jane Yolen’s latest picture book Elsie’s Bird.

Young Elsie and her father move from bustling Boston to a homestead on the Nebraska prairie. Elsie feels lonely and isolated in the endless sea of grass and the seeming silence. When her only companion, her pet canary , escapes from his cage she  rushes out into the tall grass and finds, while searching for the bird, that her new home has pleasures all its own.

Illustrator David Small successfully captures both the energy and busyness of the city and the more subtle motion and beauty of the American prairie of the 1800s.
