Jon Scieszka doesn’t disappoint. Picture books such as Squids Will Be Squids and Robot Zot throw off wry punchlines or funny phrases–“Maybe you should shut transmission sender!”, while Guys Read: Funny Business shows off humorous short stories by authors like Eoin Colfer, Jeff Kinney, and Jack Gantos–full of psychotic turkeys, dares gone wrong, and devious younger brothers. The grandfather in Christopher Paul Curtis‘ “You Think You Got It Rough?” is a character for sure. I couldn’t look at hotdogs in quite the same way.
Then there are the literal funnies: comics like Foxtrot and Garfield. I am an abiding Garfield fan; he never gets old. Except, of course, when he’s having a birthday. (Cue Binky singing, “Happy birthday, happy birthday, whoop-de-doo…” Told you I was a nerd.) For a different but equally funny take on Garfield, go to Garfield Minus Garfield, which is just what it sounds like. Without Garfield in the strips, you get a rather… interesting view of Jon Arbuckle.
So what books make you laugh?
